The title of my print, Alien 5030 11-15, is taken from my father’s immigration file, his petition to enter the United States at Seattle in 1926. The document’s twenty-six pages of transcribed interrogations is testimony to my father’s false identity, assumed and memorized in detail to circumvent the restrictions of the Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882. False father and siblings, false name, false date and place of birth, and false destinations; at the time of his death, my father had not yet given up the ghost.
Alien 503011-15 is an intergenerational reckoning, an account not deplete of aspiration.
