My work explores my complicated identity as an adopted Chinese American. Growing up in the United States left me questioning my origins and wondering about my Chinese family. In 2019, I received results from a DNA test and discovered my older sister. She was raised in China by our biological parents and as a result of China’s former one-child policy, we have been separated for 25 years. The braids in Intertwined and the connected arms in Shirt for Two (Sisters) represent my sister and I reuniting. The garment is intended for my sister and I to wear together and embrace.
