The source imagery for Embrace #1 is a photograph I took ringside at Madison Square Garden in 2018. This four-color screenprint is from a series that blows up photographic details of boxers clenching in the brutal hug that is part of every match. The images point to the mixture of violence and tenderness, of strategy and exhaustion, and the mutual respect embodied by these moments. During this pandemic, the pictures take on an extra layer of meaning as breath, sweat, and human touch are loaded with ominous implications.
