I’m interested in exploring the cultural phenomenon of how we commemorate both happiness and mourning in Pakistan. I focus on the relationship between human behavior and the connotations attached to the common elements in these events. I grounded my research on two major parallel and contradictory congregational events, that most of us have experienced culturally living in Pakistan. I often found myself in an ambiguous space, where it was difficult to differentiate between the two polar events signifying happiness and mourning. I’ve aimed to highlight this ambiguity by documenting common elements in visuals that could be easily mistaken for either.
