Almost everything I do as an artist is an attempt at answering the question: “Where are you from?” Since my identity has always invited scrutiny, my work, in return, seeks to question who my audience is and where they are coming from, even if that audience has yet to be created. Whether it’s shooting candid video portraits of my doppelgangers or staging a storefront portrait-drawing-as-oral-history project, I see my role as an artist and educator as rooted in the same practice and purpose: to generate participatory action as a form of collective understanding.
